From the application software point of view, the transfer unit is the message. A message is usually a continuous space in the virtual memory. Message length can be anything from 1 byte to several Megabytes. The messages are not necessarily word-aligned. A message is transmitted from the local user memory to the remote user memory. There are several message types, depending on the synchronization mechanism.
